The strengths and weaknesses of the 4-4-2 formation

Over the past 100 years, several football formations and styles came in and out of fashion (and popularity). About ten years ago, the 4-4-2 formation was the best choice for most football teams (though most managers now prefer 4-5-1). This does not mean that they are still not used by many teams (and are used effectively) just as they are not used as widely as they once used.

Why was it so popular? First of all, because your team is lining up, they are gaining strength throughout the pitch. Most expert tactics say it works so well that it allows players to work in pairs where everyone has a partner to cover them when they get their position and where they can work together to play the ball at pitch.

If you get two strikers in advance (ie, two players to score) offers a lot more offensive opportunities than if only one player would advance.

This tactic was used by Manchester United during the brilliant victory season between 1998 and 1999. This worked particularly well because the additional attack opportunities offered by the formation helped to prevent attacks and deep protection of teams (as often happens when a large team plays a small team).

Although it may seem like a perfect tactic, the team 4-5-1 is often beaten these days. The reason is that instead of 4 midfields in the 5th place instead of 4, you can control the game much better.
